優婆離

(優婆離, 优婆离)

Upāli [lang id =1028]優婆利; [lang id =1028]優波利 (or [lang id =1028]優波離); [lang id =1028]鄔波離 A barber of (sa) śūdra caste, who became a disciple of Śākyamuni, was one of the three (sa) sthaviras of the first Synod, and reputed as the principal compiler of the Vinaya, hence his title [lang id =1028]持戒 Keeper of the Laws. There was another Upāli, a Nirgrantha ascetic.
